ListenAlaska was launched in December 2006 for the library patrons of thirteen Alaskan libraries in part by federal grant funds through the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Alaska State Library. Alaskan libraries were among the first group of libraries in the nation to sign up for OverDrive’s (the ListenAlaska Plus vendor) shared digital library collection. Today, participating libraries pay annually for ListenAlaska service licensing and collection purchases. ListenAlaska Plus is currently administered by the Alaska Library Network on behalf of partner libraries.
Patrons of ListenAlaska libraries are now able to access a dynamic collection of downloadable digital audio books, eBooks and music anytime, anywhere through the ListenAlaska website. As of June 2012, collection held almost 14,000 titles with an annual circulation over 125,500. Since 2006, many more Alaskan libraries have joined the ListenAlaska consortium.
